How to get a Social Security Card

Getting a Social Security Number (SSN) is a very important part of your Au Pair year. This is your United States Identification Number. It is also the one thing you will need to get BEFORE you get anything else. It is a very simple process, but something you should do the second week of your arrival. Getting a SSN is also a part of the Department of States rules that dictate the participation of both the Host Family and the Au Pair. With a SSN, you will be able to pay taxes, open certain types of bank accounts, apply for a credit card (although, I don’t recommend a credit card, as a check card/debit card is perfectly fine and does not have any fees associated with it), and a driver’s license! With a driver’s license, you will no longer need to carry your passport on a day to day basis! Yay! Keep the passport safe at home…

Social Security Cards are Free. In order to apply for a Social please be sure to bring all of your documents! Once you have gathered all of your documents, I-94, DS-2019, Passport, and any other documents you may need, you are ready to fill out your application. Please print out TWO copies (in case you mess up on one of them) of the application. Once you fill out your application, you will need to go to the Social Security Office closest to you and apply with one of the officers.

There are a few Social Security Offices in San Antonio/Fair Oaks/Boerne. I have listed a number of them below for your convenience. Please call in advance to make sure that these addresses are still valid and that they have not changed. The social security offices open at 9am and close at 4pm. I would strongly suggest that you arrive early as lines can be long. It will also be helpful to bring a book. There is a lot of waiting involved so a book is a good option.
